sharing with users not registered to u1

Asked by Carsten

May it be possible to share files with other users or friends, who don`t have any Launchpad or U1 accounts?
Or is this feature limited to real Ubuntu users with these mentioned accounts?
Thank You
With regards,

Yes you can. The easiest way to do this is using the web interface.
1. Go to the folder you would like to share (you can only share folders right now)
2. Click on the Sharing tab on the right.
3. Enter your friends email address and share it with them.

It's that easy!

Thanks for your reply.

But, unless I did oversee something, the user does need an Open Id account to accept the sharing offer and gets rerouted to the Launchpad login site, if he is not logged in to Launchpad.

"To accept this share offer, use the following link (You will need to login):"

This, in my opinion, excludes anybody, who is not in touch with Ubuntu and makes fast and spontanous file sharing impossible.

Or did I do something wrong?
Thank you for your patience.

My apologies, I misinterpreted your intentions. Currently there is no way to share files with people who are not Ubuntu
One Users. This may be a feature in the future.

I really hope so, because of this feature, I envy Apple`s Me.
But Ubuntu One does really have a great potential.
Thanks for your help.

If sharing files is limited only to registered UbuntuOne users, it makes the service next to worthless, except for being a mediocre online backup service.

Robert,

We've made it extremely easy to share files with people who are not currently Ubuntu One users and it's really easy for them to register within a couple of clicks to our free service. Registering is necessary since we have to have some way to identify a user so they can access your files.

You may also be interesting in a public file sharing service we are currently working on. Make sure you subscribe to our mailing list or listen on twitter (http://twitter.com/ubuntuone) or identi.ca (http://identi.ca/ubuntuone) as we should be releasing details of this service in the coming weeks.
