Is the server software FOSS?

Asked by Siegfried Gevatter

I've already seen that all the client stuff is GPLv3 (with a weird custom license for the icons), but will the software running on the server be released too?

Hi Siegfreid, the server software is not distributed or released under any license. We currently don't have any plans/roadmap to release it.

It is sad to see that Ubuntu does not plan on releasing the code for the server portion of Ubuntu One. One of the amazing freedoms of Ubuntu I think is its use of open source and to not contribute back to the comunity is disheartening.

Out of interest with it being closed source, what makes it different to Microsofts soloution?

Regards,

Matt

I agree. The server solution should also be AGPL. If it is shipped with ubuntu then you will get lots of customers still coming to ubuntuone.com because they don't go shopping arround. Plus, under the AGPL, everybody benefits from other websites using the software. With the protocol open anyhow, it is possible for another server solution to be built, so why not open source the current one.
