rhythm box not working

I cannot get my music player(Rhythm box) to play my music library nor can I get the media player to play movies. How do I fix this?I have installed all my music from my second drive and it shows up on the music player but when I highlight the song/file it shows that it is playing but no sound is coming through my headphones. I also have a lineport system hooked up and have tried to swith between default system and lineport 6 but nothing seems to work. Any suggestions. I am new to tis system and have only worked with Microsoft XP before.

have you installed the restricted extras package? This is a set of packages that plays a lot of multimedia that for licensing reasons can not come pre-installed. If you go to Applications --> Ubuntu Software Center and in the search box enter:
ubuntu-restricted-extras
