Thanks for Ubuntu One!

Asked by Danté

I'd just like to thank the Ubuntu One devs for Ubuntu One!

I used to use Dropbox, but I wasnt happy with the price nor the 'is it going to work today?' workflow.

I am now a paying customer :)

I do have one small question; a critisism of Ubuntu One seems to be that it is not entirely open source (but more so then Dropbox, another reason to switch! :D) so I was wondering why are some parts closed? Competitive advantage? Is it open enough so that those who want to run their own Ubuntu One server can?

Again, thanks for Ubuntu One, and thanks for your time :)

Hi Dante,

Thank you for the kind words and support!

The parts of Ubuntu One that are not open source are on the server side. If someone wanted to run Ubuntu One on their own server they would have to implement a server component that supports our (open source) storage protocol [1] which the (open source) Ubuntu One client uses. If you or someone you know is interested in building this, we'd love to discuss it with you.

Thank you,

Joshua

I hope Ubuntu One is at the very least considered to be open sourced in the future :)

Thanks again!
