The "Connect" button in the Devices Tab is greyed out

Asked by josef lauri

I have already posted two bugs on this. I have Ubuntu 10.4. I re-installed the whole system from a dvd. I have two accounts with ubuntu one. In both cases I have registered my computer, but in both cases the client does not allow me to connect my machine, as described in my summary above.

I installed 10.04 on my son's old computer, this time by upgrade via synaptic, and it seems to work well for him.

Please help me because I do not want to use dropbox or other clouds. I was considering upgrading to 50G, but even the 2G subscription is not working for me.

Do you need me to send you some log files?

Josef Lauri

PS The client gives my name as unknown although it gives correctly the name of my computer and my email address.

Hi Josef,

Can you try running the following command on your computer that has the connect button greyed out and let me know the results?

u1sdtool -q; killall ubuntuone-login; u1sdtool -c

If that does not connect you, can you try removing your Ubuntu One token from your keyring and running the command above again? You can do this by following these steps:

1. Open Applications->Accessories->Passwords and Encryption Keys
2. Under the Passwords tab, click on the "+" next to "Passwords: login"
3. Right-click on "UbuntuOne token" and select delete
4. Close Passwords and Encryption Keys

Thank you,

Joshua

Hello Joshua,

I had already done this (I think I got it from the FAQ site, but I did
it again.

The system answers with

ubuntuone-syncdaemon stopped.
ubuntuone-login: no process found

or

ubuntuone-syncdaemon stopped.

depending on whether I have the Ubuntu One Preferences open.

I also tried again removing the ubuntu one token from my keyring. I also
removed the computer (from the Ubuntu One Preferences under the Devices
tab, got the browser window asking me to register the computer, did
that, but still the connect button is inactive.

Hi Josef,

Based on the bug report you filed, it looks like the Ubuntu One syncdaemon is trying to change the permissions on the /home/josef/Ubuntu One folder but it's not permitted to. Is it possible that you installed Ubuntu One as root or changed permissions on folders used by Ubuntu One?

Thank you,

Joshua

Hi Joshua,

I don't think so. I downloaded the ISO file, burnt it on dvd, and then I
did an installation from scatch because the previous installation (9.10)
had some problems, like firefox not working properly with its add-ons,
etc. Then I loaded back the data which I had backed up.

How do I find out? Or is it easier to change the permissions on the
Ubuntu One folder. I know I never did this.

You might be right. The permissions for the folder Ubunu One are all
open, but the owner is root. This is what ls -l gave me:

drwxrwxrwx 2 root root 4096 2010-06-11 15:11 Ubuntu One

Hi Joshua,

It worked!! I changed the ownership of the Ubuntu One folder and its
contents and the greyed out button is now functional and I am synching.

Thank you very much indeed!!!
