Music Store with older Ubuntu?

Asked by Jamie Waldron

Is there a way to utilize the Ubuntu One Music Store without having Lynx installed? I have an older UMPC that the manufacturer went down during the economic crunch and never opened their driers before their demise. That being the case, I can't get beyond Ubuntu 8.04 kernel 2.6.24-16. I like the idea of supporting the recovery of the Iberian Lynx; so I hope you have an answer that doesn't involve getting a new computer as that would definitely exceed my music budget for the year. :)

Currently the Ubuntu One music store is specific to Ubuntu One users and works in combination with the file sync
service. So unfortunately, it's not best suited for users who are not using these services.

If you want to purchase music directly, you could got to 7Digital to purchase music. But AFAIK no proceeds will go to
the SOSLynx organization.

However, you could also give directly to the organization http://www.soslynx.org/ if you prefer.

John,

First, thank you for the rapid and informative response. Second, I
have an Ubuntu One account; although I haven't yet tried to set up the
file sync service; so I don't know if it will work with my version of
Ubuntu. I also noted that you said that it is "not best suited" for
users who, like me, have older versions. Does that mean that it will
not work at all for us or does it just mean that it won't be as easy?

Thanks,

Jamie Waldron

Hi Jamie,

Ubuntu One will work on Ubuntu 9.04 and higher. If someone wants to work on backporting Ubuntu One, we'd like to help answer questions and remove as many roadblocks as possible. If you or someone you know is interested in doing that, please let me know.

Thank you,

Joshua
