Suggestion: Backup system config

Asked by Kevin Pattison

You could have an extra option to "Backup Ubuntu configuration". This could keep a backup of:
- dpkg config, including repository setup, installed packages, packages on the ignore list, etc.
- contents of the /etc folder

This is intended to be able to restore a system to very close to it's state if you need to reinstall Ubuntu, or migrate to another machine, and you have installed all your packages through apt-get/dpkg/synaptic.

It's very basic here, but thought I'd mention it and cleverer people than I could elaborate.

Kevin,
Thank you for taking the time to share you ideas.

I have a project I have been working on that syncs a list of installed packages and config files.

Also there are plans to develop something like this at the coming UDS. Here are the notes on that.

Duane beat me to it! I was going to mention his project and didn't even realize the OneConf wiki page out there. It's definitely something we've talked about on the Ubuntu One team and the Ubuntu community is even further ahead than us on it. :-)

Thanks,

Joshua
