What is u1sync for?

Asked by Jugney

This should be an easy question.

I'm curious why u1sync exists. Is it to allow syncing folders that are outside a user's local Ubuntu One folder? If so, I'd think that would be a pretty big thing - myself and I'm sure many others would want to know that. It means we could use Ubuntu One without changing our directory structure.

The man page seems to indicate the above, but it is a little cryptic.

u1sync operates separately from the Ubuntu One synchronization daemon and shouldn't normally be used with
directories under "$HOME/Ubuntu One" (although --diff is always safe).

Hi!

The u1sync utility was built for testing and to use with scripts without affecting your main ~/Ubuntu One/ folder. It does not provide the ability to synchronize files outside of your ~/Ubuntu One/ folder. The good news is that with Lucid (10.04), we're providing the ability to synchronize folders outside the ~/Ubuntu One folder. You can find more information on this feature (user defined folders) at: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Specs/LucidUbuntuOneSymlinksAndUDFs

Thank you,

Joshua
