Re-syncing Ubuntu One cloud storage with local folder

Asked by Jugney

I had a problem with my sync a few weeks ago, so I moved my folders out of the Ubuntu One folder to avoid future problems. However, one folder got lost in translation. All of its contents are in my online storage but I don't have it locally on my machine. Now I'm wondering, how do I safely get them back on my computer (i.e. re-sync with the cloud) without risking their deletion on the server?

Thank you!
Jugney

I realized I had a backup of my files on an external HD, so I experimented a little.

I reinstalled the U1 client, and moved my Documents directory into the Ubuntu One folder, and then out again. After moving it out, the web interface started showing my storage usage gradually dropping until all my files in the cloud were deleted.

It would be nice to have a way to get files off the web client that aren't on my machine locally, without having to download them individually. This would apply to a new installation of Ubuntu where someone wants to just get all their old files off the cloud. It would be a shame if they tried to do that but Ubuntu One deleted all their files on the cloud instead!

Perhaps I'm missing something here, but I'm putting this out there because the above use case is one way I would like to use the service.

Hi Jugney,

In the scenario you suggested (a new install of Ubuntu and someone has files on the Ubuntu One servers) the new install should download all the files from the server once Ubuntu One is setup on the new install.

Thank you,

Joshua
