To use the Ubuntu One beta PPA instead of the default Karmic packages, do the following:

  1) Open Applications->Accessories->Terminal, then run: sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys 0x44d63d274c717c9bd583c20c4da51af64bd0ecae
  2) Open System->Administration->Software Sources
  3) Click the "Other Software" tab
  4) Click the "Add..." button
  5) Paste in: deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntuone/beta/ubuntu karmic main
  6) Click the "Add Source" button
  7) When prompted to reload sources, click "Reload"
  8) Open System->Administration->Update Manager
  9) Click the "Install Updates" button
   9a) NOTE: If you don't see Ubuntu One client as an update, click the "Check" button first
 10) Right-click on the Ubuntu One client and select "Quit"
   10a) NOTE: If you don't see Ubuntu One in your task bar, you can quit Ubuntu One from a terminal session: killall ubuntuone-client-applet ubuntuone-syncdaemon
  11) Open Applications->Internet->Ubuntu One

You would want to do this when there are features or fixes only available in the Ubuntu One beta PPA that you are interested in.
