Problem Installing Ubuntu on Vista

Asked by shyenuganti

Hi ,

I am new to this forums and here goes my question.........I have Windows Vista Home Basic Edition on my Laptop. Now I am trying to install Linux on it. The problem is that no Linux is able to recognize my hard drive to get installed. I tried Fedora Core 6 And also Ubuntu 6.10 for AMD.

My OS is Vista.
My Processor is AMD Turion 64 X2 Dual Core.

The problem is that every Linux installation is stopping at the screen which asks to select the parttion on the hard drive to which Linux has to be installed. On that screen I cannot see or select the HArd drive of my computer. Linux is not able to locate it. I tried the same set of CD's on a XP system on which they worked. But th problem is to install Linux on Vista.

Can anyone please help me regarding this issue.

Thank you.................

Sri Harsha Yenuganti

Hello !

In fact, the problem can't come from Vista, as Ubuntu is fully independent from any previously installed software ... It's possible that your hardware configuration is not recognized by the kernel of the current release ...

Is it possible for you to try the upcoming release (Feisty Fawn: Ubuntu 7.04) ? It's available here http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/feisty/herd-5/ and has an increased hardware support (particularly with SATA drives: I had alo a problem with it).

Please have in mind that this is not a stable release yet, so you might experience difficulties for using it (but install process should go smoothly).

Hope this helps !

Regards,
Benoît

Hello !

As I told you, an improved hardware support comes with Ubuntu 7.04 ... Maybe you could try it (it's unstable, but usable). Download links available here: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/feisty/herd-5/

Hope this helps !

I am having the same problem like Sri Harsha. I have Amd 64x2 with Vista home premium and HDD of WDC *******., My computer is HP DV2020ca.

I have successfully installed Edgy in Virtual PC 2007 under Vista and it works fine. I didn't have any problem with installation (it took about 2 hr though) and for some initial glitches regarding screen resolution.

However, under vista, neither Edgy nor Feisty CD is recognized. I tried to boot both Ubuntus, but the live cd was not recognized either.

I tried to install same live CD in another computer with XP (as other OS), both Ubuntus live CDs were recognized and I have installed Feisty in HDD. My other computer is Toshiba Satellite A30, Celeron with 30GB Toshiba HDD.

I want to install Ubuntu in my HP DV 2020ca? Any help will be appreciated.

Can you help with this problem?
