Hi,

Unfortunate it appears that this printer isn't supported on linux yet. I've had a similar frsutration with another canon printer.

Here's the openprinting.org page for the MP160: http://openprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=Canon-Pixma_MP160

Sorry about that,

Matt

If you have just bought the printer, I would recommend trying to return it for a refund. It is a vote with your wallet kind of thing, if you buy hardware from mfgs that don't support Linux you are just encouraging them not to support Linux in the future. You may want to contact Canon and ask them about support for this printer in Linux. The more they hear from their users, the more likely they are to get drivers for this printer.

Best Regards,

If you install the drivers provided by Canon. Then the printer part works I have the same printer, scanner Canon Pixma MP 160. I have printed test page also from gedit. Works fine. Has anyone found how to use the scanner?

There are four files that have to be downloaded for the Canon Pixma MP160, two for the printer and two for the scanner to work. They are cnijfilter-common_2.70-2, cnijfilter-mp160_2.70-2, scangearmp-common_1.00 and scangearmp-mp160_1.00. They are in *.rpm format they have to made into *.deb using alien and then install. I did that and installed them. Now I can print as well as scan. Thank God So this priner does work and so does the scanner. I have done both successfully. I did not know that the executable was in /usr/local/bin as scangearmp for scanner and ctrl+p can be used from applications for printing.

hi there jeffrey, can you explain exactly what you did after installing the .deb packages? because I installed them, and I don't have a clue what to do next ... I tried adding the printer through the "printers" window from the administration menu (I'm using Ubuntu Feisty), but I didn't find it on the list, and it's not on the list of the available printers in any program (like open office, gedit, pdf reader ... etc.) , I'd appreciate the help, thanks.

Hi Fernando, I hope you resolved the problem with your drivers. I am having a similar problem, but I have found the drivers for my Canon Pixma iP1500 but don't know what to do next as it is all new to me. I understand I must go to Applications then Accessories and then Terminal. Up pops some text on the screen so do I leave it there and continue to type in the codes I have been given? I then have to restart Cups and don't know what this is?
I don't know if you can help me, but thanks a million in advance.
Kind regards

Can you help with this problem?
