Is the first dmesg the full output taken after usb stick is inserted?

Did you give it time to load?

Not sure precisly what the issue is, but can you provided the following information:

Output of:
 lsmod | grep -i 'usb'

both before and after inserting USB stick.

the output of:
 find /lib/modules/`uname --kernel-release` -iname '*usb*storage.ko' -or -iname '*scsi*mod*.ko'

What filesystem is the USB stick formated with?

Can you try the slax liveCD again and type 'dmesg' after inserting the stick?
Also can you post the output of:
mount
from the slax CD.

Can you also try the following procedure (on Ubuntu):
Make sure the USB stick is not inserted.
Type: sudo rmmod usd_storage
Insert USB stick
Type: sudo modprobe usb_storage
Post output of dmesg

can you also post output of:
ls /dev/sd*
both before and after inserting the USB stick.

What kind of result do you get if using some other usb port?

try the recommendations from Andy above and I think we will be able to find out about this one.

I have yet to see a usb stick not been recognized by ubuntu, so this one sounds like something we should look into.

your question, I think I just copied the last part of

I suspect that your ACPI bios reports something untrue concerning interrupts to the linux kernel.

You could try the following:
Append noapic to your boot options as follows:
- Reboot and press ESC when the boot loader loads to show the boot menu. Press e on the default entry and append noapic to the line beginning with kernel.
- Boot and plug your usb stick in.
- execute dmesg and post the output again.
- Please also post the output of:
cat /proc/interrupts
before pluggin in the stick and after

Noticed that after trying to get usb stick working,
internet connection via networked router stopped
working. Restart machine and it works again.

Ubuntu using noapic as a boot option - the usb stick
works! The effect is not permanent, presumably there
is some way of changing the boot loader permanently.
Is there a down side to doing this? Anyway, output

First issue is that one of your USB hosts is sharing the IRQ with your Network card:

uhci_hcd 0000:00:10.0: irq 5, io base 0x0000e400
eth0: VIA Rhine II at 0x1dc00, 00:0a:e6:d7:70:f7, IRQ 5.

Looks like your network card could be causing a few issues, which in turn may interfer with the USB hosts operation. Is the network card a PCI card or built onto your motherboard?

Hi

Network card is built in to the motherboard. Using
noapic as a temporary boot option caused the usb stick
to work. Can't I use this as a permanent fix?

I used the rmmod and modprobe commands and now my usb dvd drive shows up in my dmesg but not in my drive list. How do I mount it?

I am not sure,

My problem was relating to an old version of Ubuntu (6.06) a few years ago and it did not mount anything USB even an memory stick.  You don't say what version you are using but I have had no problems using modern versions.  In the case of the problem I had, it was a case of using NOAPIC as a boot option, then it worked.  I think it was related to the particular motherboard.  I am not an expert and the solution was suggested by someone else. (fhackenberger)

His reply to my original post is as follows

"I suspect that your ACPI bios reports something untrue concerning
interrupts to the linux kernel.

You could try the following:
Append noapic to your boot options as follows:
- Reboot and press ESC when the boot loader loads to show the boot menu. Press e on the default entry and append noapic to the line beginning with kernel.
- Boot and plug your usb stick in.
- execute dmesg and post the output again.
- Please also post the output of:
cat /proc/interrupts
before pluggin in the stick and after"
