Are there plans to package zoneminder 1.24.4 for 10.04 LTS?

Asked by Kevin Lucas

Hi All,

Are there plans to package zoneminder version 1.24.4for Ubuntu 10.04 LTS? The current version in the repositories is 1.24.2 and I see from the zoneminder website ( that 1.24.4 has been released.

So I'm wondering if I should update it from source or wait for the package. I'd prefer to wait for the package but if there aren't plans to include it then I'll update it from source.

Thanks in advance.

If you submit a bug stating the bug and security fixes it may be included sooner if they are significant. You may find a PPA if you search in this link:

Okay, thanks for your help. I haven't poured over the release notes for the last to versions but I've asked the ZoneMinder developers to help fill in the blanks.

If there are security bugs or major stability/usability bugs, then, as actionparsnip says, I recommend you file a bug against zoneminder in Ubuntu to request that an update be released with the fixes. Please note that this will *not* be version 1.24.4 (unless the only changes from 1.24.2 are such high-priority bug fixes). Instead, it will be a special downstream (Ubuntu-specific) version of 1.24.2 with the fixes from 1.24.4, but not other changes from 1.24.4, added. See You should check to see if such an update has already been released before filing a bug requesting it. Before filing such a bug, or any bug in Ubuntu, you should carefully read You should also search to see if such a bug has already been filed. In your bug report, you should identify or link to a page that identifies the specific security vulnerabilities or severe stability/usability bugs that are fixed from upstream version 1.24.2 to 1.24.4. After reporting your bug, I recommend linking it with this question using the "Link existing bug" link near the top of this question page.

Since zoneminder 1.24.2 is available in later versions of Ubuntu, you might consider requesting that it be made available in Lucid via the lucid-backports repository. You can do this by filing a bug against the appropriate backports project. See for details. Please note that you should search to see if such a request has already been filed (and that you can get to the place where you can to that, by removing "/+filebug" from the end of the link you'd use to file the request). If you file a backport request, I recommend you link that with this question as well (same way).

Finally, please note that, besides uninstalling zoneminder and reinstalling it from source, you could try installing a zoneminder from a later Ubuntu release. You should only consider this if you are averse to building and installing from source (or if doing so doesn't work and you cannot easily get it to work), and if no PPA (or no PPA that you are willing to use) is available. This sort of thing should most often be avoided--versions of a package from a later release are not intended to work with an earlier release and may not work, or may not work as expected--but if you want help doing this please feel free to post a reply requesting it.
