Update to OpenZFS 2.2.0-RC1 in Mantic

Asked by Damiano Albani

Hello,

OpenZFS 2.2.0-RC1 has been released a couple of days ago.
Could you update the Mantic package to this version?
I'm personally asking because I'm running into a bug which has been fixed since commit 4f583a827e3b40f3bdfba78db75e1fe1feff122c, which is the version currently packaged.

Thanks a lot!

Ubuntu 23.10 Mantic is currently under development.
Ubuntu copies its programs from Debian to avoid duplication.
Therefore, Ubuntu is not a rolling release.

Copying from Debian?
I don't see Debian providing any version 2.1.99 (a.k.a. yet to be release 2.2.0) on https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/zfs-linux, while Ubuntu does.
So isn't this patch at https://patches.ubuntu.com/z/zfs-linux/zfs-linux_2.1.99-0ubuntu4.patch maintained by Ubuntu??

Furthermore, why point to a FAQ about "no rolling release", while Mantic hasn't been released yet?

ZFS is in the packaging of Ubuntu 23.10 Mantic.
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/mantic/+source/zfs-linux
Calamares installer loader does not work with ZFS.
Ubuntu is trying to solve this problem.

Fact: Ubuntu is not a rolling release ! Never has been a rolling release

"ZFS is not in the packaging of Ubuntu 23.10 Mantic.", yet ZFS packages for Mantic are provided, e.g. https://packages.ubuntu.com/mantic/zfsutils-linux.

I don't see what my request has anything to do with the installer, or ZFS Boot Menu, or the getting started guide from OpenZFS.

To go back to the beginning: the ZFS package in Ubuntu Mantic, which is AFAIK not in code freeze, is based on old commit from upstream OpenZFS.
There has been a new RC since then, thus my request to keep up with that change.
I just don't get it: why object to this request on the ground that "Ubuntu is not a rolling release", whereas Mantic hasn't been released yet.
Will no packages in Mantic ever be updated from now until the actual release?!?

Calamares installer does not work with ZFS.
Ubuntu is trying to solve this problem.
This is Ubuntu's new installer.
ZFS option will not be included on Manitc's installer.
ZFS would have to be installed after the initial install of Ubuntu.

Where do you see a version 2.2.0-* for zfs?
It's neither on https://zfsonlinux.org/ nor on https://github.com/openzfs/zfs

That's a pre-release or release candidate.
Not what Ubuntu usually uses for its packages.

I don't think you've read my initial message carefully enough.
Or you would have seem that an even more arbitrary / less stable version cut was *already* chosen, namely https://github.com/openzfs/zfs/commit/4f583a827e3b40f3bdfba78db75e1fe1feff122c (see top of http://changelogs.ubuntu.com/changelogs/pool/main/z/zfs-linux/zfs-linux_2.1.99-0ubuntu4/changelog).
Updating to an RC can't be worse, can it?

The reason behind 2.1.99 was Bug #2018716

If the version that is currently packaged has a fault, then please create a bug report stating the details.

Yes, that's what I've done in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/zfs-linux/+bug/2025661.
The faults in question being:
1. as you said, Ubuntu packages should be based on released software (a Release Candidate being the closest to that in the case of OpenZFS)
2. bugs that have been resolved between 4f583a827e3b40f3bdfba78db75e1fe1feff122c and RC1.
For example the one I've been personally confronted with: https://github.com/openzfs/zfs/commit/55b1842f92a24fe7192d129bca7b60882080d31a.

Can you help with this problem?
