error: sound card not configured when starting Zapping, no audio (natty)

Asked by James Melichar

I have just installed ubuntu 11.04 and am trying to use the Zapping TV Viewer. I was able to configure my video source, standards and channels with no problem. But... I am not getting any audio by default, the kernel device "/dev/dsp" shows as unknown for device and driver and there are no other choices in the drop down list. In Control volume with soundcard mixer there is nothing detected and no choices at all. Also, in the desktop Sound Preferences (PulseAudio?) it says there are no applications playing or recording audio. How do I set this up???????????????????????????????????????????????

BTW, my soundcard is a Creative AudioPCI (ens1371) and IS working properly with all other apps so don't waste your time and mine by going there.

This program uses oss (/dev/dsp) for sound, which was removed from Ubuntu 10.10 and later. Try starting the program using padsp to simulate /dev/dsp:
padsp zapping

Thanks for making me aware of the existence of padsp. I tried it and although Zapping now recognizes a driver as existing, I still had to use an alsa-mixer to unmute/mute line-in and control volume. I'm going to try TVTime next and see if it works with less hassle.
