Hi,

This is probably a misunderstanding. You cannot download Windows programs with Ubuntu: Ubuntu is based on Linux, and you can execute only Linux programs.

The way to install programs with Ubuntu is way simpler than with Windows. You just open the package manager (Applications / Add-Remove) and choose the programs you want to install. No need to download from external web sites.

More information there:

https://help.ubuntu.com/8.10/add-applications/C/index.html

Hope this helps!

ive tried to go through the process of (Applications / Add-Remove) to install what i want, but the items i want arent anywhere in the lists of options. ive downloads the two things i want from the site and the icons of the files appear on the screen but i cant open them because of the screen that pops up asking which application i want to use to open it...and when i look in the add-remove area, nothing is there

Sorry of my previous message was not clear enough: you cannot run Windows programs with Ubuntu. Ubuntu is a Linux and you have to run Linux application. Windows media player is a Windows application and won't work with Ubuntu, and the programs you have downloaded are useless for Ubuntu. What you will find in Add/Remove is not exactly aim, limewire, and windows media player, but open source equivalents --other softwares doing (approximately) the same job.

Here you can find more information about equivalents: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoftwareEquivalents . Just look for them in the add/remove list. Some of them are probably already installed by default.

Hope this helps!

Dear bigbridogg1,

Ubuntu is a Linux operating system and uses a different executable format from Windows

You can't run Linux programs on Windows and you can't run Windows programs on Linux
Some companies make software for both systems (Windows and Linux) but Microsoft doesn't

There are some ways to get some native windows programs to run on linux/ubuntu like with wine or using virtual machines like virtualbox

A better solution however, if possible, is to find an equivalent linux program for your windows programs

Instead of aim - use pidgin
Instead of limewire - use linux version of limewire here : http://www.soft32.com/download_125915.html
                                    or use frostwire www.frostwire.com
Instead of windows media player - use Vlc or Amarok

gtk-gnutella is also a good alternative to limewire

I am totally new in this community and even don't know where and from whom to ask numerous questions I want, like this one. Thanks to all
