xubuntu 9.10 does not see CD ROM Drive

Asked by TonyR

I conducted a fresh install of xubuntu on a compaq persario 1200 and following I can not see my CD ROM drive. Device manager sees the drive and lists it correctly however places does not. It is listed in the fstub file however I understand that it should be mounted dynamically by HAL. mount -a command retruns nothing and I do not know what to do to reinstall the drive.

Should be ok and running fine. Have you tried to reboot the system without a CD in drive? Does a manual mount help?

Hi

Indeed it should be OK and yes it has been rebooted and restarted several times and the CD ROM does not apear availabe to use.

I have seen this before with other versions of UBUNTU but never found a resolution or explaination? what do I do to troubleshoot?

In windows it is simple to reinstall devices however if UBUNTU does not recognise devices properly there seems to be no interface to reinstall decvices and nothing you can do to get them to work.

This issue seems to be a persistent issue with UBUNTU across several versions where you can run a setup program to completion without any errors only to find core legacy devices are not recognised by the system. You post a question to Launchpad and get no response!

First of all: I'm replying right now! ;-)

- Instert the CD *after* the system has booted.

- Check your hardware in GNOME Devmanager by executing »sudo gnome-device-manager« in a shell.

- You can load unload every device with the "modprobe" command. Look it up in google and find out how to load or unload your USB, CD-ROM, soundcard, etc.

- Check /etc/fstab and /etc/mtab for correct entries.

If everything else fails open a bug report and link it to this question.

Thanks for the suggestions Aquina, its good to get a response.

I got no response at all to issue #97001 or #96636

I have reviewed the extensive information about mod probe and it is not easy for a novice to know which of the options they should be trying. Can you suggest the commands I should run and what each will done to help me learn the system. My reading about Linux tells me that HAL should auto recognise a CD when loaded and i have already checked the fstab file which looks OK.

How do I know which device to load?

I tried your direct instruction with the following result:

anthony@Presario:~$ sudo gnome- device-manager
[sudo] password for anthony:
sudo: gnome-: command not found
anthony@Presario:~$ sudo gnome- device-manager
sudo: gnome-: command not found
anthony@Presario:~$ sudo gnome device-manager

anthony@Presario:~$ sudo modprobe -a --all
Usage: modprobe [-v] [-V] [-C config-file] [-d <dirname> ] [-n] [-i] [-q] [-b] [-o <modname>] [ --dump-modversions ] <modname> [parameters...]
modprobe -r [-n] [-i] [-v] <modulename> ...
modprobe -l -t <dirname> [ -a <modulename> ...]

dmesg reports as already submitted:

So the OS sees the CD device but it cant make it work???

Please provide the modprobe device and syntax I need to run to wake up linux so my CD ROM will resume operation.

Ok try the following and check the file then:
sudo mount /dev/sr0 /media/cdrom0 >> /tmp/mountchk 2>&1

The drive was recognized so it must work. Make sure it's not damaged in any way.

What does software like Brasero or K3b say about the drive? Ever tried to burn a CD. Try the following:

1] Check burner settings:
       wodim -scanbus
       wodim --devices
       (wodim dev=help)
       (wodim -checkdrive)
2] Burn the image with:
       e.g. cdrecord dev=/dev/scd1 speed=4 fs=16m -tao -v -eject ./"PCBSD v1.5 CD2.iso"

Good luck! ;-)

Hi Aquina

Thanks for your assistance which is most appreciated.

I managed to get the CD ROM working although in Xubuntu unlike Ubuntu I do not see a CD ROM icon in places unless I load a disk. I can now read data disks and play audio CD's

Kind Regards

Anthony
