sending from Hotmail under Thunderbird in Ubuntu 9.10

Asked by ellend

I have Thunderbird set up under Windows and Ubuntu, with two email accounts each, one of them being Hotmail.
Ubuntu version: 9.10
Thunderbird under Windows: upgraded to the latest
Thunderbird under Ubuntu: 2.0.0.23 (no option to upgrade)

Ubuntu settings for mail accounts:

personal:
Server setting: port 110 (default), TLS (if available)
outgoing server: port 25, TLS (if available)

Hotmail:
Server setting: port 995 (default), SSL
outgoing server: port 587, TLS

I can send/ receive from/ in the personal account. I can receive in Hotmail, but NOT send from it. Error message: Sending of message failed. The message could not be sent because connecting to SMTP server smtp.live.com failed. The server may be unavailable . . .

I have probably tried all possible combinations of connections; also other ports.

No problems under Windows.

Any help much appreciated – thank you

thank you for your reply. But 587 is the port I have specified. I also tried 25, 465 - none connect.

Ubuntu was installed with an installer that worked from Windows, rather than directly booted from the Ubuntu install DVD ( I have no DVD drive; I did not do the installation); it was suggested to me that this could be the problem. But I had no problems with the mail until after I upgraded to Ubuntu 9.10.

I thank those who replied, but I had already tried all the suggestions contained in the answers. The problem must lie with something else.

Please consider the problem solved.
