how do I know if I have GTK or X installed (Ubuntu 9.10)

Asked by Nir Nevo

I want to install Emacs on Ubuntu 9.10
In the Software Center I can choose between
Emacs 22 (X11) - "with support for X"
and
Emacs 22 (GTK) - "with support for GTK+ 2.x"

The details in the former (X11) claim that If I have GTK+ 2.x installed on my system, I should install the GTK version

1. What is GTK
2. How do I know if it is installed
3. What's the big difference (or is it big?)

Thanx,
Nir

X11 is the basic graphic library used in Unix, so you have X11.
Above X11, you can have GDK/GTK or Qt. They provide a more high level access to graphic.
Ubuntu implies you have at least GDK/GTK.
Kubuntu implies you have at least Qt.
But you have both if you use Gnome and KDE software.

If you work with Gnome (which is the case by default), if you choose GTK, Emacs will be better integrated, and will look nicer.
