Yes webcams are supported, the make and model of the cam's controller chip determines it compatibility. I suggest you read this:

Yup, also for netbooks try the Ubuntu Netbook Remix as there are a whole plethora of different types hardware unique to netbooks. The UNR is completely remixed to take much better advantage of those unique features

There are sneaky ways of re-installing without losing data, programs, settings or anything much. Feel free to ask.
