installing lucid-server-i386.iso on mpc-l fails at login

I have installed the the server version of 10.04 alpha 2 on a Viglen mpc-l.
I was able to install the linux-386 kernel by using the repair option on the cd.
When I boot from the hdd the boot process ends with two rows of coloured pixels spread across the crt in four columns.
Following bug report #293506, if I add gxfb to the modules blacklist (/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-framebuffer) then the boot terminates at:
"init: ureadahead-other main process (758) terminated with status 4"
"init: plymouth-log main process (771) terminated with status 111"

Did you MD5 test the ISO you downloaded?
Did you run the CD verifier?
Have you tested your RAM?

Yes, the md5sum was correct;
the cd was burnt using k3b with the "verify" option;
memtest86 reports no errors.

The CD also has a verify option on the first screen it boots to.
