installing lucid-server-i386.iso on mpc-l fails at login

I have installed the the server version of 10.04 alpha 2 on a Viglen mpc-l.
I was able to install the linux-386 kernel by using the repair option on the cd.
When I boot from the hdd the boot process ends with two rows of coloured pixels spread across the crt in four columns.
Following bug report #293506, if I add gxfb to the modules blacklist (/etc/modprobe.
"init: ureadahead-other main process (758) terminated with status 4"
"init: plymouth-log main process (771) terminated with status 111"
