"gedit character encoding"

Trying to download an executable Java file and got the message that gedit could not detect character coding. Further asking me to check whether a binary file is to be opened. plz Suggest that character encoding.

Gedit, which is a text editor, can't open Java bytecode.
A downloaded Java bytecode should simply written on hard disk.
Select another Java bytecode file, open contextual menu and check which software is proposed to open it.

i wanna install a .rpm file. how would i be able to do that.

.rpm is a kind of package which is different from Ubuntu's default debian package management system (.deb). however, you can install rpm packages also . first install
sudo apt-get install rpm

then install new package usting rpm package management system. it will bipass debian system .
