I cannot view the extention of a file on ubuntu

do you know in windows you can make it so that:

*file-name* goes to *file-name*.doc
you cannot do it in ubuntu.
at least I don't think you can.
can you answer it?
it is confusing me now.

File extensions (like ".doc") are always shown if they are present. This is unlike Windows systems where by default they are hidden. No way to turn this off as far as I know.

Note that it is not necessary for a file to have an extension (even on Windows systems), but it helps to keep them as the applications expect them. When saving something from some application, by default there should be a suggestion for the file name and this should usually include this extension.
