Occasional jerky mouse movement in Ubuntu 9.10?!

Asked by Ivan Jekic

Actually, the whole system slows, esp. graphics, but mouse movement is the most annoying. It happens suddenly and out of nowhere. Sometimes I can work in Ubuntu for days (hours and hours) without any problem and sometimes it happens just when I turn my computer on.

Usually it happens about 1x a day. I'm using onboard Intel G45 graphic and so far didn't notice any problem, whatsoever - it was very fast.

I tried ending many programs, restarting X but nothing helped - only resetting the whole system did. It is frustrating especially when I'm in the middle of my job. :(

What info and logs should I provide to you so you can assist me any further? Thanks.

Thanks greg, but I don't think this has anything to do with the mouse. Changing the mouse parametres don't help and the whole system slows.

System Monitor does not show anything unusual like 100% CPU or memory load. I tried flushing the memory cache with "drop cache" command, but without any success.

When it becomes jerky open a terminal and run:

dmesg | tail

give the output here

Looks like the USB is having issues with IRQs with your ATA controller and the USB. I suggest you jump into your BIOS to make sure the BIOS ius handling IRQs automatically. Try websearching for some of the lines above to see if anything appears

Thanks actionparsnip!

I investigated interrupts further and discovered that problematic IRQ was actually two mutually connected USB ports, others were functioning normally.
I don't know why, but I connected my mouse to the regular USB port - I didn't use the one provided for the mouse, next to the keyboard PS/2 port. I fixed that and so far everything runs smoothly!

P.S. I also updated the kernel to 2.6.32.7.
