display stuck in wrong aspect ratio

Hi im newer to Ubuntu! I have a HP Pavilion dv5000 running ubuntu 9.04 and under one of my users the display settings got messed up when i pluged in an external monitor and now i cant get them back. it has a wide screen but is stuck in 4:3 it should be 16:10? is there anyway to reset the settings? its under my administrator user.
