No Sound from mother board based sound card, ALC861vd

Asked by John K on 2007-07-17

This is a new pc build, my 6th, first time with Linux. Also new to Linux although I played with Unix many moon ago.
I can not get the sound card to play anything. I also tried the front panel headers on the pc, double and triple checked the connections (back connections are on the board). I verified volume controls are not muted, tried the digital, analog, and auto detect settings. Tried with speakers and headset in all jacks.

I read some of the other posts. I am including some of the print outs requested in the other posts.

~$ lspnp -v
lspnp: /proc/bus/pnp not available

The last item would not run until I loaded package pnpbios=tools.

Am at a stand still. Looks like the drivers are loaded, saw Capabilities <access denied> which raises a question in my mind. Do not suspect a mother board issue but want to rule out everything first. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks

Forgot to mention load is ubuntu 7.04

What are you trying to play? Is this by chance related to codecs, I mean mp3?

John K (jkadlecik) said : #3

Any sound, system sound, tried cd audio, wav file. Can hear the audio device initialize when the system boots, but can not get the sound to play.

I realize that mother board sound cards are marginal at best. I am in the process of installing a Creative Labs Audigy SE in my windows machine so I can use a Creative Labs Live 24 bit in my ubuntu machine. I read the notes on SE and the problem with Creative drivers. Will update with status in a few hours.

John K (jkadlecik) said : #4

Creative card worked without a hitch. I disabled the on board audio first, then shut down, inserted the card, booted up and had sound.

Next I shut the pc down, pulled the Creative sound card. On boot up I entered the bios and enabled the on board audio again. Now the on board works. I looked at Alsamixer again, see no change. Shut back down, reinstalled the Creative Card, now I have two sound cards. Both work.

Did I somehow enable something with activation of the Creative driver that I missed with the on board audio driver? I am at a loss to explain.

John K (jkadlecik) said : #5

Something must have been stuck, do not know what the issue was, motherboard, software, but now fixed and both working.

Ziv Kohav (ziv-kohav) said : #6

John,
I have the exact same problem- same card. The only difference I see is that my audio revision is a2 and not a1, but everything else is the same. I don't have another card to install like you did, but it seems from your solution that this may not be needed. Did you manage to figure out what was the problem there in the first place?
Thanks,
Ziv

Ziv,
I have no idea why it was recognized when the sound card was installed. I reloaded ubuntu again because I hosed up the permissions file that we are not suppose to touch with root login. I just looked, the on board audio does not work again. The Creative sound card is working fine. I did not notice until you brought it up. I don't know why it was detected and worked when I installed the sound card the first time. At a loss.

I actually solved it last night. It was such a relief after 7 hours of browsing through Ubuntu forums. Apparently there's an ALSA patch number 14 which fixes the whole thing. It's 1.0.14rc3 and there are three folders with this patch: alsa-driver-1.0.14rc3, alsa-lib-1.0.14rc3 and alsa-utils-1.0.14rc2. You can find it in the reported bugs. I think you can run a search on these file names. You install the patch and then turn on the volume in the sound control panel and it's done. very easy once you find the files. Listened to youtube for hours after that just to hear the great sound it gave...
Good luck.
