trying to install a package i get this /etc/apt/sources.list error

I typed the command "sudo apt-get install build-essential"
it asked for the password i gave it
now it says

E: Type 'https://launchpad.net/~c-korn/+archive/vlc' is not known on line 55 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list
E: The list of sources could not be read.
please answer

also due to the same error massage i am not able to get to synaptic package manager
what to do??

that means your etc/apt/sources.list errors on that "line" witj VLC. remove it, or place a # before that line
go to your software sources and add the vlc ppa there with signing the pgp key via: https://edge.launchpad.net/~c-korn/+archive/vlc
click on technical details.
and sign the key via the terminal

sources.list via: sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
