How to run Squeezebox

Asked by Ebin

I have a fresh install of Ubuntu 8.01 with all updates complete.

I downloaded a .deb program from a site that offers it as a Debian alternative to Windows
(Squeezecenter, a server software for the Squeezebox media streamer that runs in Firefox)

I have it install by double clicking the file, it updated dependancies and installed the program.
I can see it in the file system, but cannot run it, there is no "icon" or listing in "Applications" menu

Tried running it from the terminal (alt f2), nothing happens.
do I need to make a "launcher"?
(need to set up software, ie: music folder, prefs and such)
I am a beginner at Ubuntu and am wondering what I am doing wrong

Thanks
Ebi

Look at http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/DebianPackage and scroll down to "Instructions for Ubuntu"

Thanks for the quick reply.

I have added the repository and now see
the current ver of the software.

Unfortunately I am trying to install an earlier
ver of the software. That is the .deb file I have.

So by double clicking the older deb file, and letting it go
through the motions of dependancies and installing.
it should be running on boot up, according to the Wiki.
(if this is correct way to install individual deb files)

It seems there is no stop/start, other than terminal
commands for this software.
And accessing program is through web browser
if I can find correct location.

Am I installing the deb file correctly??

Thanks again
Ebin

Hi! Squeezebox has an "applet-like" interface (no desktop icon, but you can create one) so what you need to do is open Firefox (or your favorite web browser) and enter the following in the address bar:

http://MyMediaServer:9000

This might fail if the server is not running, in which case you should open a terminal (Applications-> Accessories->Terminal) and write (or copy) the following:

sudo service squeezeboxserver start

or restart in recent versions.

Hope it helps!

OK Thanks!!!

Can I make a start and a stop icon on desktop using the "Make Link" command
and type in the "sudo XXXX" command.

Need to start/stop program while I set it up, and so it doesn't interfere
with a windows ver running on another comp. attached to same network.
Funny thing is that I can look at the win ver running on other comp. in Firefox
at the URL (IP of win comp), but can't find the ver running on Ubuntu comp.
Gotta figure that one out still.

Also can I make a link out of a URL on desktop
(as in replace sudo command with URL, like win active desktop)

Will try to open/connect to running app. next time at comp.

Really appreciate all the help.
Cheers
Ebin

Great!
I believe that the Squeezebox isn't supposed to start if there's other instance already running on the network. (I use it just once, and that was the behaviour)
One thing about the use of 'sudo': this command "borrows" administrative privileges for the application, so use it carefully!!! and when making a desktop link you might want to use 'gksu' instead (is the graphical front-end of sudo), because if not the application won't run.
