find com port

Asked by GAWoods

Sorry but I am new to Linux (Ubuntu 9.10).
Trying to setup efax-jtk. How can I find what com ports are being used on my computer or which com port my modem is currently assigned?

Hi GAWoods, serial ports are under /dev and usualy are named like ttyS0/ttyS1 for motherboard's ports and ttyUSB0 for serial to usb converter.
What kind of modem do you have?
You could use gnome-ppp to autodetect modem's port
Greetings!

I have a HP Pavilion dv9830us laptop that a ram chip went bad in and before I was able to determine that was the problem I had screwed up the OS which was Vista64. So, once I replaced the bad ram I decided to try this operating system.

I am not sure about which brand of modem is installed. I am going to try to look it up on the HP support site.

As I stated I am new to this operating system but have been using computers since the 80's. I will try what you suggested to see if I can get mine to work. I just use it to send/rec faxes.

Thanks for your time...

Looks like my modem is a Motorola SM56 Data Fax Modem
