how to recover data from previous install of ubuntu, after installing anew to gain access to internet, after mistakingly installing update that prevented me from being able to connect to wireless

Once you have installed a newer ubuntu version, there's no way to get
the configuration data from the erased hard-drive, all the config lies
in /home in hidden files that you can copy over to flash-drive or a
external drive.
