external hard drive not accessible after formatting

Asked by drskartik

I tried formatting an external hard drive of 500 GB capacity to FAT 32 system using gparted. However the power supply for the external hard drive got disconnected before the formatting could be completed. Now it is not possible for me to access the external drive. Is it possible to recover the hard drive?

run:

gksudo gparted

Repartition and reformat the drive. The outage may have damaged the IDE in which case you can send it back under warranty.

I mounted the hard drive on another laptop with Ubuntu karmic 9.10. I tried gparted again to format it , but it was getting struck in between. I just rt clicked on the drive and formatted it to FAT32!!, sometimes solutions can be so simple.
I will now try it on a windows system also and see if it works.
Thanks again
Kartik

I think media formatting option must be provided as a default application in Ubuntu 9.10 and higher, especially when we are in GUI.

it is, thats what gparted is for as well as making partitions.
