Ubuntu will not install, I have been trying for two days

Asked by Rich P.

I have been trying to install Ubuntu for the last two days and I get the same problem. When I select the install Ubuntu option the screen goes black and a flashing cursor appears in the upper right hand corner and the install process stops there.

I have burned every current 9.1 iso (ie. server 32bit, server 64bit, desktop 32, desktop 34, alternate cd, etc) multiple times onto cd and dvd on 3 different burners. every edition passes the disk check and were burned at the slowest speed.

I have also tried a usb installation.

I have tried 2 different motherboards

5 different cd drives (3 were ide, 2 were external usb)

and every combination of boot parameter I can think of.

The only thing that gets me past the flashing cursor screen is by adding the "pci=off" command. This allows me to select language and keyboard type, but then I get a screen saying the cd-rom is not detected and I cannot get past that point.

My current hardware is:

CPU: 2.7ghz AMD semperon with the sargas core
M/B: Asus M4A78L-M
RAM: 2 x 1 Gigs of Patriot DDR2 PC2-6400 800mhz CAS 4-4-4-12
HDD: 2 x Seagate Barracuda 400GB SATA (this is a clean install there is nothing on them)

Please Help Me Im starting to go crazy!

have you burned the dvds in bootable mode ? Don't copy the image it has to be burned as bootable...
and then set the bios to boot from CD or DVD (removable media)...

Hi :)

this guide for helping to make sure you are making the Cd's properly. Note that cheaper cds are usually better as more expensive ones are optimised for a different purpose
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto

Then oin any particular hardware setup it is worth trying the LiveCd session first as it offers different boot options easily
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCD

Once you can get a Live Cd session working on a hardware set then installing properly is much easier. Note that the LiveCd session should be able to access these forums and at
http://www.linuxquestions.org

Sorry it was so long before answers started filtering through. Hopefully something here helps!
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)
