Do I need to backup my documents when downloading Ubuntu?

Will I need to backup the files on my computer (mainly music) when switching over from Vista to Ubuntu? Thanks

Yes redpanda, you should always back up files that are important to you, regardless.

When Downloading - probably not necessary.
When installing - probably not a bad idea.

If you wish Ubuntu gets the whole hd, Vista incl. music files will be gone.
Backup is essential any time, no matter what changes are to come.
Making a separate /home partition is a good choice.
Maybe consider dualboot.

Sorry to enter in the conversation.. another question.
I love the idea of making a different partition to /home directory. Then, when upgrading the system I don have do backup.

But, in the other hand, when reinstalling linux, I prefere to do a fresh install. So...
Could I maintain the Direcotories like downloads, music, documents, and delete the ocult config files?
If I do that, when installing ubuntu and choosing not to format the /home partition will it cause a damage to the system?
