cannot access ubuntu from windows through its hostname

 I cannot access my ubuntu pc from windows xp through its hostname , But it can accessable through its ip address.Here both of my systems are in same subnet.What is the possible problem existing here , please help me .

Check they're using the same workgroup name in /etc/samba/smb.conf.

If they're the same, you might have to install Winbind on the Ubuntu machine.

yes they are in same workgroup and also samba is working fine

I suggest you add a resolution in /etc/hosts to make the translation happen locally

You can also make sure your DNS servers in /etc/resolv.conf contain your routers IP address

Occasionally, you can make Ubuntu visible by adding the machine name in the "send hostname" line in /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf.
