video extension problem...

It is the greatest problem observed by me. The media player coming with ubuntu does n't support common video extension such
as .dat(general extension in video cd) ,.mpg,.mp3,.mp4...
I can not play the video cd's with ubuntu...
How can I work these video files in my ubuntu 9.10?..

have you installed ubuntu-restricted-extras ?

If you want to play commercial video dvds you will need to add the medibuntu repo and install libdvdcss2

I did n't install any additional packages...

sudo wget --output-document=/etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list http://www.medibuntu.org/sources.list.d/$(lsb_release -cs).list && sudo apt-get --quiet update && sudo apt-get --yes --quiet --allow-unauthenticated install medibuntu-keyring && sudo apt-get --quiet update; sudo apt-get install libdvdcss2

Ok I done.
But when the media player opens it says additional plugins are required and shows plugins when I select and try to install them it says that packages not found out..
What can I do easily???

In system>admin>software sources check all under ubuntu software and first two under updates tab.Reload.In software center find ubuntu-restricted-extras and itstall it.
