Will Ubuntu take advantage of a Dual-Core or Quad-Core processor?

Asked by Bernard Gallagher

I'm shopping for servers to install Ubuntu onto ... http://www.abmx.com/1u-server

Am I better off with a 3 GB Single-Core CPU, or a 2 GB Dual-Core CPU?

Will Ubuntu take advantage of the second CPU?

Absolutely. Ubuntu Server Edition runs well on systems with multiple CPUs and cores. At work, we run it on several Dual-Processor Quad-Core (8 cores total) system. I'd be happy to provide information regarding specific applications and multi-core/multi-cpu support if you require.

Thanks! I don't need personal help just yet, since I'm still only designing the site. I just want to know, right now, if it's wortwhile investing in a Dual-Core CPU or just getting a faster Single-Core.

So okay, Dual-Core it is! Thanks!

But for now, I'll be installing Desktop Edition and using the box to develop the site. Then when the site is ready to go live, I'll wipe the HD, install Server Edition, and set it loose on the world...

I'm not expert but what if you want to make another site after you wipe server version? Will you wipe your system every time when you have to make new site?Like I said I'M not expert but I think it must be more elegant solution for your needs.

@zvacet - What? No. I plan to build just ONE site (for now). Everyone tells me that I should develop the site on Desktop Edition because it has the GUI and is optimised for development. I plan to build the sit using LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP). When the site is ready to go live, I plan to wipe the HD and install Server Edition because it is optimized for server functions and is hardened to be web-facing. At that point, I'll just let the site run with minimal maintenance and collect revenue from the googleads... Sound like a plan?

And if that site actually turns a profit above its operating costs or hosting expenses and I get the urge to develop a second site, I'll get a second machine and repeat the above process. One server per site...

If I do develop a family of sites, I may have a gateway site with links to each of them, but that'll just be single page of static HTML, nothing fancy. And each of the individual sites will have a little link that says "Powered by BlahBlahBlah" with a link back to the gateway. That can ride on one of the existing bozes. But that's a LONG way off...
