Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#When%20not%20to%20file%20a%20bug.

Hello - could you please copy and paste the exact command you are using?

Before Karmic we used Grub 1, which could be edited with the command: gksudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst

(NOTE the space after the word gedit)

Since Karmic we have used Grub 2, which is different and cannot be edited in the same way.

You might look at e.g. a YouTube video called "Editing / Adding Grub 2 Menu Entries (Ubuntu 9.10 and Up)" at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TDf_fRAophc

In case after upgrading from 9.04 to 9.10 menu.lst still exists.
Regarding the cmd, space missing between gedit_and_/boot
gksudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst
