Trouble downloading graphics drivers.

Asked by Tara

A friend recently wiped my computer and rebooted it with Linux, after which I began the r- installation of World of Warcraft. I've encountered numerous problems. The game is on the computer, but I can't seem to get passed the launch pad before the game screen goes haywire. I've followed the directions here http://www.fsckin.com/2007/12/20/how-to-run-world-of-warcraft-wow-in-linux-using-wine/comment-page-3/ and have looked at several how-to guides, and I think I've only managed to make things worse. The first step was checking the drivers, and originally the terminal response was Yes, so I assumed I was okay, but going back later after encountering difficulties I discovered that I don't have proper drivers downloaded, and when I tried to use the software center to download Nvidia drivers it didn't do anything. The Administration > Hardware Drivers tool says that there are no drivers in use on my computer, and more research led me to find that it means I have to search for the makers of my graphics card and see if they have Linux-compatible drivers I can download. I've no idea what my graphics card is, even after more researching and typing in the terminal. I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing, and am probably making matters worse. I really just want to get WoW running again and fix all of my graphics and driver problems for the future. If anyone can help, it would be much appreciated.

Alright so a couple of things here:

1. Does glxinfo | grep rendering infact return no, because if not then
you don't need to install the hardware drivers.

2. There's a package called envy in synaptic, download that and then
choose the drivers that match your graphics card.

3. If you use karmic, then go to system -> administration -> hardware
information and you should be able to find more info there, it looks
something like this [1]

4. This might be able to give you more info on your graphics card: [2]

There are lots of Linux users who don't care how the kernel works, but
only want to use it. That is a tribute to how good Linux is.
