Scanning with Canon Pixma MP560

Asked by Richard A Bevis

I recently purchased a Canon Pixma MP560. I followed the forum link suggested by wojox to question #89520:
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/89520 from there I downloaded the printer driver and scangear packages. I forced the printer driver installation per jmcvey's instructions and now it works great. I assumed I could do the same with the scanning software by simply substituting file names in the sudo command and it seems to have worked. However, when I follow the Scan prompts on the printer LCD, it always reverts back to the "put document on platen" screen with no scan performed. Jmcvey says in the forum he/she is going to try the scangear later (back in 2009). Sir or Madam, I implore you to share your results. As always, any help from anyone, even moral support, is greatly appreciated.

Will Xane work with the 560? When I open it from app>graphics, first a scanning for devices window appears (it never says if one was found), then a bunch of little windows I don't fully understand appear referring to a "BisonCam?" I can't seem to find where or how to configure the scanner. Thanks again.

It says: scangearmp: error while loading shared libraries: libgimp-2.0.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory. Synaptic says libgimp2.0 (without the dash) is installed and unbroken? Thanks for replying so quickly.

No, I am using 64 on a system76 Pangolin. That's why per jmcvey's instructions in his/her forum post which I reached through wojox's link from question #89520, I had to add a --force to the sudo commands.

Lacking the knowledge necessary to write my own scanner programming, I returned the Canon Pixma and bought a trusty HP. Fyi, I really liked the Canon, so I went to turboprint. Their driver supports printing only, no scanning. The Asian printer driver worked great, the scangearmp, not at all. Canon/USA says at this time the Linux OS is unsuppoted, but they are "looking in to it." I pleasantly suggested to the customer service rep that Canon step it up on that.
After confirming on hplip that the Photosmart C4640 is fully supported, I picked it up. Immediately it was recognized, configured, and ready to print. I opened XSane and there it was listed with the "BisonCam." I keep having these visions of some Buffalo in Montana somewhere running around with a camera on his head. Now that would be some reality show. Alas, I digress. Anyway, thanks again for the help.
