What is best OS for P4 2.66MHz 512mb w/32gb hd

Asked by billofbellaire

My old laptop (Winbook j4) is no longer responsive to Windows XP update downloads and it is bogged down at best. I want to convert it to lighter, faster service use. Which version of Ubuntu OS will fit my specs best. Pentium 4 at 2.66MHz with 512mb RAM and 32gb hard drive and DVD=/-RW.

Ubuntu requirements https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/SystemRequirements

- Install a torrent client: http://www.utorrent.com
- download the iso using a .torrent file from here http://releases.ubuntu.com/karmic/
- check the md5sum https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM of the downloaded iso
compare with the MD5SUMS you will find here: http://releases.ubuntu.com/karmic/ and if it is wrong
- download the iso again and recheck the md5sum to be sure is a good iso file

Then burn it, be sure to burn the cd at lower speed you can do and with the data verify active:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto

Then boot your pc from that self burned cd, you must not see Windows starting, and install Ubuntu:
when requested by the installation step process answer/select "Use entire disk"

Welcome to Ubuntu.

Presume you meant 2.66. Ghz... I have a Dell Dimension 4500S running Karmic. It has slower processor (1.7 GHz?) but more RAM (1G?). The network adapter(s) may be a different story - wireless in particular.
