Newbie here my hp laptop running on 9.10 will not resume display after i close it then open it.

I am way too new for anything less than detailed instructions on how to fix this problem. I am sorry but please help me?

sorry i forgot to say it is a laptop when i close the lid and then open to resume the display will not come up no matter what i press.

It sounds like your computer doesn't have support for suspend on a fresh install. Could you tell the model of your computer and we can try to help more. If you don't want the computer to go into suspend when the lid is closed you can control those settings here...
System -> Preference -> Power Management
Note that there are two tabs to work with there... On AC power and On Battery Power

Maybe you just need more swap? I am no expert myself, but it seems to me that for suspend to work the swap space must be considerably larger than your memory. The automatic partitioner just allocates a fixed portion of the disk as swap, regardless of what's needed. I use 5GiB of swap for 4 GiB of memory, which works perfectly well with a 32bit install. And a 64bit install could handle a lot more, I suppose.
