i found on a web site i could run gksudo getit/boot/grub.cfg that it showed that 2.6.31-14 is installed .. but it had a warning [do not make any changes ] .. are there programs that can only run on 2.6.31-14 ? befor i re- installed i run gpart live to clean the hard drive , to have a clean install.

the reason there is 2 listing of the kernel is that one is the restore and the other is the generic . also 2.16.31-14 can be removed by use of the synaptic package manager safely .. i keep 2.6.31-16 and 2.6.31-17 and system seams to run fine .........
