Cannot scroll down in Grub boot menu

Asked by j,jackson

I am dual booting with Xp and ubuntu 9.10 with Xp as the last menu on the screen I have never had any problems before with using the down keys on the keyboard to scroll down to Xp. But I have just purchased a new keyboard and mouse which uses a usb receiver, I have to load into Xp which I did using the old keyboard and everything seemed ok. After switching off and unplugging the old system, on switch on the boot menu appears as before but the keyboard down keys do not function so I cannot scroll down to Xp and it loads the top first menu which is ubuntu which loads ok and the new keyboard works ok just like the old one. Is there any way I can scroll down as before?.

Set your BIOS to failsafe defaults and try again

Many thanks to actionparsnip for the reply,

This morning i checked the usb sockets out and found that I had plugged the usb receiver into a four pin PCI extension board on the back of the Pc, which seems to be powered up when the system has loaded," ie too late." I have now plugged into a usb socket directly off the motherboard which loads straight away on power up and every thing is okay.
Hope this may be of use to anyone else with an extension card.
