how long is bit torrent going to take ? info about torrents speed

Asked by Randymanme

I want to download an 150 MB iso image. The website said that if possible, download with bit torrent, so I made that selection. That was seven hours ago. Right now, the transmission box says "Seeding to one or one connected peers - 46 KB/s." Now it says "Seeding to 0 of 0 connect peers - idle." I've noticed it get down to 1 KB/s.

Now my math is kind of rusty, I'm thinking that if my calculations are correct, if one KB/s were the average, (1024 x 1024 x 150 =157286400; 157286400/60 (seconds) = 2621440 (minutes)/60 = . . . . no that couldn't be right.

Furthermore (now it's up to "Seeding 2 of 2 connected peers - 54kb/s), the box is saying: "150 MB, uploaded 173.1 MB (ratio: 1.15)." Now, when I started, I didn't know what bit torrent is; I presently have some idea . So am I correct in assuming that my download is completed, but the seed is continuing to use my computer to seed other clients?

I'm used to getting some notification when the download is complete. I don't want to terminate the connection if mine is not, in fact, finished. But, then, too, I don't want to be still waiting on this for more hours. What to do?

Any help or insight would be much appreciated.

A seeder is a peer that has a complete copy of the torrent and still offers it for upload. The more seeders there are, the better the chances of getting a higher download speed. If the seeder seeds the whole copy of the download they should get faster downloads. Hence, if your client is just "seeding" and has finished "downloading" then it would be safe to exit the application as the download has completed. It would generally be good practice to allow the current users that you are seeding too finish before exiting the application.
