publish number of users statistics?

Asked by hielos

Well, I have seen that many companies support Ubuntu (and Linux in general) on the basis of the market share. I would like to know if it would be possible for Launchpad to publish the number of registered users in the Ubuntu Group. I also know that there are some projects (statix) trying to achieve the goal of counting Linux users. I am guessing that it would be useful if Launchpad could publish this information... just saying. If this has already been done, where can I get such information? This is to satisfy my curiosity. Thanks

Uh, this is interesting. I had seen some other statistics on the web, but nothing like this. I actually asked if Launchpad could publish their data, because I know that only registered users would use Ubuntu. All the statistics I have seen only give assumptions on the numbers (http://www.desktoplinux.com/news/NS5155657721.html). For instance, we cannot assume that everyone who searches for Ubuntu on the web is a user. Everyone seems to say that it is very difficult to count the number of Linux users, and I guess they are quite right. However, forums users are very likely to continue using Linux after installing it, so we could probably have a better guess if we start publishing this information (which doesn't threat privacy). I don't know, but I think that Launchpad may be the biggest forum, and would represent very well this information. In any case, it is an interesting question which I may never be able to answer (statix was proposed several years ago, and hasn't got any results yet). How should I mark this?

Can you help with this problem?
