If you're using Karmic, the sound control has been changed, check the volume level right-clicking in the sound icon on the upper-right part of your screen, and select 'sound preferences', on top of the sound preferences window you'll find a control that let you set the sound level to a value "greater than" 100%

hope it helps

To get all mixer control also try...

Please first enable the universe repository:

Open System → Administration → Software sources → [ Tab Ubuntu software ]
enable "Community Maintained open source software (universe)"
Close and confirm the repository reload.

Then open a Terminal from the menu Applications → Accessories → Terminal and type:

sudo aptitude update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo aptitude install gnome-alsamixer

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

Then try to run gnome-alsamixer from menu Applications→Sound & Video GNOME Alsa Mixer

unmute and raise to a non zero values and retry.

Hope this helps
