Which version of Ubuntu can I install?

Asked by GSMoreno92

I tried to install Ubuntu 9.10 on my laptop. Got tired of Microsoft and their ridiculous licensing rules. Ran the ubuntu install from the ISO that I burned to a CD. After the installation, at reboot, the system couldn't find the boot sector... Anyway, turns out that Ubuntu 9.10 ONLY works as an upgrade from a previous version of Ubuntu. Since I never had a previous version installed, it didn't work.

Question:
Which version of Ubuntu could I install from scratch, and then upgrade to 9.10???
Can anyone help???

I got a new laptob with Windows 7 and could not endure the garbage MS did with the system over previors systems. I have given up on MS & thought Ubuntu could be the solution. So I find the site & do what is said & have the same problem. At least this forum gave a quick possiblity of a solution and I will give it a try. But my question is, "Why is this not explained in the web site to download the system? That would certainly make life easier.

You should be able to run 9.04 from the Ubuntu website, wait for a
while like until April Lucid is coming out, hopefully it will solve
all your problems :D

Waiting for download of 9.04 and still trying. What system are you using and did you need other download to burn image DC? I am on a new Windows 7 which does nothing new but moved everything so it is hard to find. It also is better at protecting itself from anything. It is mostly a platform for selling games & stuff. Continuous popups to upgrade itself with no way to prevent it.

i downloaded ubuntu 9.04 from:
http://releases.ubuntu.com/9.04/

I used a program called Burn4Free from download.com
click on "burn ISO" then choose the ISO for 9.04

once it's done burning... Boot the system up using the CD

Once 9.04 was installed, I ran the Update Manager from the Systems Tab
Display said "New upgrade available - Ubuntu 9.10"
I downloaded and installed it directly from there..

It worked PERFECTLY

My system is a Gateway 600YG2 Laptop
