Where is the .iso file?

Asked by Adam Marshall

I just downloaded Ubuntu for netbooks, and I want to run it as a virtual machine in VMware, but I cannot find the .iso file to create the virtual machine, any help would be appreciated.

From where you downloaded the Ubuntu? and what is the format of the file you downloaded?

Did you download or open it? If the latter, it might just have gone to temporary files, opened with some program (under Windows e.g. WinRAR can handle ISO archives as far as I remember) and afterwards got deleted.

If it was downloaded and this was on a Windows machine, I'd use the search in Explorer and look for files named (not containing!) *.iso on all local disks.

In case of a Linux machine, I'd open a terminal (for example on Ubuntu by pressing ALT-F2 and entering "gnome-terminal" as the command) and use this command (don't forget the quotes):

find / -name "*.iso"

If it is at all on your machine, this should find the file. In case it is in /tmp it is a good idea to move it to some other location as this can get deleted on a reboot.

I extraced the .rar, and the iso wasnt there, I looked in Winrar options and .iso was a supported format, so I'm not sure what to do, it only has options for a usb creator, but shouldnt it still have an .iso file?

I doubt you downloaded the correct file.
The ubuntu netbook remix can be downloaded from : http://www.ubuntu.com/GetUbuntu/download-netbook
and its a iso file.

Ubuntu desktop : http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download

Remember all downloads are iso files. Save them on HDD.
No file will be in .rar format.
If it is then you are downloading from some other location(afterwards may create trouble for you!) or wrong file.
