Ubuntu 9.10 does not start but in $ prompt

My machine 9.10 does not start anymore.
After the white ubuntu simbol, then it goes to linux prompt $
How can I get a normal Ubuntu. ?
Could anyone please tell me how to solve it.

I realised I lost Nvidia driver, when I typed startx it says fail cannot find module "Nvidia".
What I did:
sudo apt-det install envyng-core envyng-qt
then run from terminal
envyng -t
then select 1 (install nvidia driver)
then select 0 (install the latest driver, as recommended)
reboot
now Karmic up and running again
